We seem to be developing five themes of activity in our aim of encouraging carbon reductions and other lifestyle changes. These themes are listed in the menu below, along with the addition of a junior section.

Public Awareness

Public Awareness Activities

Public Meeting - 20th Jan 09

90 residents from the village and its surrounding area enjoyed a night to remember of presentations, discussions and demonstrations. Besides a direct and fairly emotional introduction by our Chairman, Rod Collins, in which he reminded us of the threats and challenges of Climate Change, the audience was then treated to an engaging talk by Chorley Council’s Jo Oliver, one of its leading Officers on the environment. She demonstrated the Council’s new, all in one, recycling bin and described their new, innovative, plans to collect waste food.

Finally, before ending the evening with a hot pot supper, the audience was treated to an inspirational talk by Garry Charnock, from Ashton Hayes near Chester, the first village in the UK to go carbon neutral. Please visit their website www.goingcarbonneutral.co.uk for more information.

Village Funday - 7th Sept 08

Our first big day out. Thanks to Pete's efforts lots of visitors made their own smoothies by powering a food processor with their own pedal power. We also distributed free hessian bags, GreenTeam frisbees to those passing our recycling quiz and gave away numberous books in our free book exchange.

LCC Climate Change Fund Award

In July we were awarded a grant of over £9,000 from Lancashire County Council to set up an awareness roadshow comprising various presentational materials including some demonstration equipment, placards, projection equipment, some hot tips and give-aways and a trailer to transport it all to various locations within a 10-mile radius of Mawdesley.

Local Demonstration Projects

We have submitted an application to install a solar PV array at St. Peter's C of E School. We would like to ultimately assist all the schools in the village with renewable energy.

We are also looking into other potential community based renewable projects, such as a solar thermal installation for the Jigsaw charity.

Working With Nature

We have had our first Community Smallholding / Allotment meeting and were very encouraged by the big turnout (34 of us). We now have 10-12 volunteers who are going to take the project forward. Watch this space, and the contact us page, for developments and details of meetings. If you would like to register your interest, or get involved, please get in touch.

We have also followed up a Council offer of some free trees, which we will be looking to plant in the village. A couple of members are also involved in a project to keep bees on the village green, with a view to producing and selling our own honey.

Learning From Others

We are keen to link up with other local groups and networks in order to see what we can learn from them, or share with them. So far we have made contact with a group in Burscough, Hilldale and Garry Charnock of Ashton Hayes (see www.goingcarbonneutral.co.uk).

We have also pledged as part of our LCC grant commitments to share, and assist with, our demonstration equipment with any local groups that would like to use it.

Lobbying Authorities

We are aware that our own domestic energy savings, and lifestyle changes, alone will not be sufficient in the wider scheme of things. However we do believe that efforts need to be made at all levels i.e. globally, nationally and locally. With this in mind, we are keen to do our bit locally whilst also lobbying to higher authorities.

Issues that we are currently pressing with local Councellors are the over use of street lighting and the poor regulation of plastic packaging. On a positive note our governments pledge to reduce carbon emissions by 80% by 2050 shows their commitment to head in the right direction.

Junior Activty

This section is to keep you updated on the activities of our junior members.

The first entry is a presentation done by Joe Clegg, a Year 4 pupil at St. Peter's C of E School. Joe did the presentation in his own time (using skills he had learned at school), and then presented it to the school in assembly: Saving the planet by Joe.

We have submitted Joe's presentation to support the application for a grant to install a solar PV array at St. Peter's School.
